Hypertension - Diet and precautions

Hello everyone.

 I am Doctor Atul Dhage. I am Psychiatrist, sexologist and counsellor. In my clinic I daily see patients having sexual disorders. Many of them have hypertension as co-morbidity. Hypertension and some medications for hypertension can hamper sexual functioning and can cause erectile dysfunction Many patients with cardiac diseases have erectile dysfunction. So, taking care of these things is important for healthy sexual life. Today I am going to tell you about diet and some other things which can help you to keep you healthy and lead physically healthy and active sexual life.


 

 


*1. Take Low Salt Diet*

1. Total salt intake should not exceed 2.5 grams per day.

2. Do not take extra salt during meals.

3. Use Losalt, where salt is essential.

4. Avoid salt rich foods like pickles, papads, sauce, cheese, salted butter, salted biscuits, wafers, popcorns, salted peanuts /cashews, salted butter milk.

5. Take potassium rich foods like grapes, oranges.

 

 *2. Take Low Fat Diet*

1. Avoid saturated oils like coconut oil, dalda( vanspati ghee), butter ghee, cream. Groundnut oil.

Instead Use monosaturated oils like- olive oil, mohari oil or polyunsaturated oils like- sunflower, corn, karadi (safflower oil)

2. Avoid all deep-fried foods, unskimmed milk, meat.

3. Increase fibre intake that is Leafy vegetables, salads, fruits, pulses and legumes.

4. Use skimmed or double toned low-fat milk.

5. Be very strict about low fat diet, of Cholesterol is high, or lipid profile is abnormal.

6 Use minimum quantity of cooking oil, by using non-stick utensils.

 

*3. Exercises*

Exercise is very important.

45 minutes of brisk walk or jogging at least 5 days a week.

Or else you can do any other exercise or aerobic exercise which burns at least 300-400 calories per day.

 

*4. General measures*

1. Check your Blood pressure regularly at least once in 3 months.

2. Check your weight regularly. Reduce weight if necessary.

3. Regularise working hours.

4. Take good sleep for 7-8 hours.

5. Stop alcohol, Smoking cigarettes or using tobacco in any other form.

5. Learn and practice stress management. Pursuing your hobby or Yoga can be helpful for relaxation of mind.

6. If you are suffering from depression or anxiety take treatment for it.

5. Take medicines as advised by your doctor.

6. If you are facing problems of erectile dysfunction consult sexologist.
